Adventure Games That Trust You to Explore

Adventure Games That Trust You to Explore

July 7, 2026 · Markus Reinholt

There's a special joy in being dropped into a place and left to figure it out. Too many adventure games smother that with waypoints and constant hints.

Hollow Tide is my favorite recent example. It hands you a drowned city and barely a word of instruction, and the discovery is the whole point. I pieced together the story from murals and empty rooms, not quest markers.

Exploration works when the world rewards curiosity. A locked door that finally opens three chambers later teaches you to pay attention. That's design respecting the player.

If you love getting lost on purpose, seek out games that resist telling you where to go. The best moments are the ones you find yourself.
